Self-neglect awareness week 2024

The North Somerset Safeguarding Adults Board (NSSAB) were pleased to present a self-neglect awareness week in July 2024. Each session ran daily online and was recorded. Those recordings are published on this webpage for you to view.

You can view a detailed breakdown of each session and speakers in our self-neglect awareness week PDF.

The NSSAB provides support, guidance and intervention services for the safeguarding of adults in North Somerset. Our self-neglect awareness week was aimed at raising the visibility of self-neglect in North Somerset through multiple professional lenses and voices of lived experience.

Day 1 welcome and opening

This opening session is introduced by Teresa Bell, Independent Chair of North Somerset Safeguarding Adults Board. She is joined by Michael Preston Shoot, a leading national authority on Safeguarding Adults Reviews (SARs) and on self-neglect.

Day 2 overcoming barriers

This session discusses barriers that face organisations working directly with our community and the people with care and support needs living within it.

Day 3 self-neglect and the mental capacity act

Identifying self-neglect, understanding the legal and practice issues surrounding it and developing a plan to address any concerns can often be challenging and requires a multi-agency approach. This session aims to understand some of the challenges experienced in practice and provide clarity on these issues.

Day 4 multi agency risk management MARM

This presentation introduces the concept of MARM, share what concerns would meet the threshold for MARM, how agencies can refer to MARM and how the MARM process will work in practice.

Day 5 trauma informed practice

This session provides an update on trauma informed practice happening across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire and our aspirations for 2024/25. The short presentation is followed by questions and open discussion.
